US secretary of state Marco Rubio spoke to CNN in the aftermath of the fallout from the White House.
He defended Donald Trump and JD Vance and repeated criticisms of Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s conduct in the White House – where he was present on Friday.
He also said recent press coverage of Ukrainians being left out by the US had frustrated the US administration ahead of the meeting.
Rubio described the Ukrainian president’s words as an “active open undermining of efforts to achieve peace”.
The senior US official went on to repeat the oft-said that President Trump is a “deal-maker”, saying he wouldn’t get “suckered” into a poor deal by Russia and Vladimir Putin.
“I have doubts that Zelenskyy’s willing to say and do the things we need in order to get a negotiation,” Rubio added.
