Breaking News : Brad Pitt’s Critically-Acclaimed Sci-Fi Drama is Coming to Hulu

Ad Astra, one of Brad Pitt’s most recent box office bombs, has found a new home on Hulu, and hopefully, it will get the love it deserves from TV viewers looking for their next hard sci-fi fix. The film released in 2019 cost an insane amount, $135.4 million, but it failed to gather enough at the box office to recover its production budget. According to Hulu (via CBR), the streamer will be adding Ad Astra to their library starting November 1 as the spooky season ends, and streamers renew their catalogs

The film was directed by James Gray from a script he co-wrote with Ethan Ross. Starring Brad Pitt (who also participated as a producer), Ad Astra follows Roy McBride, a major in a government organization who’s forced to join a mission because it’s a bit personal. There are energy surges coming from outer space, and they are a threat to humankind. McBride’s connection with the cosmic event regards his father, Clifford McBride, who left Earth 29 years ago to explore a part of the galaxy where the surges are coming from.

As Roy embarks on a journey to outer space (a trip that, judging by the standards of the film, will be very easy in the future), things go wrong. After a few incidents, Roy realizes he was pressured to join the mission because his father wasn’t exactly compliant with what started decades ago, and it seems he went rogue.
Although it got the critical acclaim it deserved (it’s still at 83% on Rotten Tomatoes), the film was a major box office bomb. Director James Gray was very disappointed with the final cut that he had no control over, and apparently, the theatrical cut was the product of excessive studio intervention. He aimed to make a realistic film in space, but people prefer to remember Interstellar in that aspect. Nevertheless, it’s one of Pitt’s best films to date, and it features a great score by Max Richter and beautiful cinematography by the legendary Hoyte van Hoytema.
