Breaking News : Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny Blast Trump Rally’s Racist Puerto Rico Joke…See More
Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and Ricky Martin were quick to amplify messages from Kamala Harris’s campaign after a comedian delivered racist jokes disparaging Puerto Rico at Sunday’s Trump rally in Madison Square Garden.
Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe opened the rally with a series of jokes that drew widespread criticism.
Most audience members were unsure how to react to his set, according to reports, as he tried to laugh off the uncomfortable moments
Hinchcliffe’s performance included derogatory remarks about Palestinians and an antisemitic joke about Jews.
At one point, he singled out a Black man in the audience to draw upon a racist stereotype. But at the center of the current criticism was a joke about Puerto Rico.
There’s a lot going on. I don’t know if you know this, but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now,” Hinchcliffe said. “I think it’s called Puerto Rico.”
This comment received immediate and harsh pushback. Harris’s campaign said it was a “vile and racist tirade against Latinos” via a post on X.
Tim Walz and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who is Puerto Rican, responded to the post, calling Hinchcliffe an “a-hole” and a “jackwad
Even the Trump campaign gave an uncharacteristic apology. “This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign,” a senior adviser said in a statement.
After the rally, several Puerto Rican celebrities took to Instagram to repost a message from Harris.
The video they shared struck a particular nerve, reminding viewers of Trump’s controversial response to Hurricane Maria in September 2017.
The stakes were clear: Trump’s administration had withheld about $20 billion in relief from Puerto Rico following the hurricane, an action a federal report later described as holding the funds “hostage.”
While Trump favored aid to Texas and Florida — states that had paved the way to his victory in 2016 — his approach to Puerto Rico became infamous when, two weeks after the hurricane, he visited San Juan and threw paper towels to people in the crowd.
Bad Bunny shared the Harris video on his Instagram story three times, each with a tighter shot on Harris’s face. Martin posted it with the caption “I remember.” Lopez reshared the video, and later, Harris’s policy platform on building the Puerto Rican economy.
Luis Fonzi, a Puerto Rican singer, also reshared the video and endorsed Harris. “I love roasts, trust me I get it, BUT….this is far from comedy,” he wrote on his Instagram story. “Going down this RACIST path ain’t it.”
