Actress Emma Stone reached a landmark career milestone this awards season, as she broke multiple Oscar records, one previously held by Meryl Streep.

With the Jan. 22 release of the full list of nominees for the 98th Academy Awards, Stone, 37, received two nominations for best actress for her starring role in the dark comedy “Bugonia,” and best picture for her role as producer on the film.
The feat pushed her career total to seven nominations, and she became the youngest woman in Academy history to reach that number. In 1988, Streep set the record for women when she secured her seventh nod at age 38.

Currently, Streep, 76, is the record-holder for most-nominated actor in Oscar history, holding 21 total nominations and three wins.

“Thank you to the Academy for these nominations and to everyone who poured their hearts into ‘Bugonia,’” Stone said in a statement following the nominations. “None of this exists without our director, Yorgos [Lanthimos]. I am forever grateful for our creative partnership and friendship.

“I share this recognition with the beyond brilliant Jesse Plemons and our remarkable cast, crew, and producers,” she continued. “To be in the company of all of these incredible nominees is a true honor, and I’m deeply thankful.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Stone is also the first woman to be nominated twice for producing and acting in a single film, after receiving the same nominations in 2023 for her film “Poor Things.”
“Bugonia,” a remake of the 2003 South Korean film “Save the Green Planet!”, is nominated across four categories: best actress, best director, best adapted screenplay, and best picture.

The film follows the story of two young men who kidnap a high-powered CEO of a major company. The conspiracy-driven men are convinced the CEO is an alien with intent on destroying planet Earth.
Throughout her career, Stone has received 284 total award nominations and 113 wins, including the Oscar for best performance by an actress in a leading role in 2017 for “La La Land,” and the same accolade for “Poor Things” in 2024.
This year, Stone is up against Jessie Buckley, Rose Byrne, Kate Hudson, and Renate Reinsve in the best actress category.

The 98th Academy Awards will air live on ABC and stream on Hulu on March 15, with comedian and late-night television host Conan O’Brien hosting for his second straight year.
