Just in : Selena Gomez Reflects on Deep Friendship with Taylor Swift: “We Were the Best Thing That Happened to Each Other”…See More
Selena Gomez is peeling back the curtain on one of pop culture’s most enduring friendships, her 16-year bond with Taylor Swift.
Appearing on Wednesday’s episode of the “Therapuss” podcast, the 33-year-old singer and actress reflected on how a mutual dating history with the Jonas Brothers unexpectedly blossomed into a lifelong sisterhood.
I dated Nick [Jonas], and she dated Joe [Jonas],” Gomez shared. “It was cute. We were young. … We didn’t know what we were doing.”
The former Disney Channel star added that she was about 15 at the time, while Swift was 18, in her signature “crazy curly” era, with bracelets stacked to her elbows. “It was really sweet,” Gomez said of their first encounters.
Though their romances with the Jonas brothers didn’t last, Gomez and Nick split in 2008 and again in 2010, while Swift and Joe called it quits in 2008, the friendship that emerged between the two women proved far more lasting. “We like to say the best things [we] got out of those relationships was each other,” Gomez said warmly.
From teen heartbreak to timeless loyalty
As Gomez recalled, the friendship truly cemented during those shared moments of young heartbreak. “At that age, [Swift and I] became best friends [and] bonded over the breakup,” she said. “As girls do.”
But what started as a connection over teen romance soon grew into a foundational relationship. “Then, I don’t know, we just stuck around for all the ups and downs that came after,” Gomez explained. “And here we are now 16 years later.”
Their support for each other has played out in public and private. Gomez shared a special moment that highlights just how deeply they trust one another.
Before releasing “Love Story”, widely believed to be inspired by Swift’s relationship with Joe Jonas, Swift played the song for Gomez in a hotel room. “I remember it vividly,” she said. “I instantly heard it and thought, ‘This is one of the most beautiful songs ever.'”
Swift’s modest introduction still stands out in Gomez’s memory: “OK, I just want to play you this song. But just, like, I don’t know. It’s going to be the first single, I think. I think,” Swift had told her.
Calling Swift an “incredible … chameleon,” Gomez spoke with admiration for the artist’s growth over the years, even as their friendship remained a constant.
