atrick Mahomes’ connection with Travis Kelce failed in dramatic fashion during the Kansas City Chiefs’ Week 9 defeat to the Buffalo Bills, when a misfired pass struck a cameraman near the end zone.
The play came as Mahomes tried to find Kelce on a short route, but the ball veered off target and slammed into a cameraman crouched in the scoring area. The impact knocked him to the ground instantly.
Mahomes’ arm strength is well documented. The Chiefs quarterback was once timed at 60 mph during the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine-matching the fastest throw recorded-and can throw a baseball at 95 mph.
Given that velocity, the accidental hit looked painful. The camera was unharmed, but the operator was briefly shaken. One fan joked online, “This should be an assassination attempt.”

The NFL later confirmed that “he’s fine,” though the league did not release the man’s name.
The moment added a symbolic twist to a frustrating day for Mahomes and his offense as they slipped to a loss at the Highmark Stadium in Buffalo, falling 28-21 on the afternoon in another regular season defeat to the Bills.
Mahomes completed just 15 of 34 attempts for 250 yards, threw one interception, and was sacked three times.
Despite one highlight, a fourth-and-17 conversion to Kelce that set up a short Kareem Hunt touchdown, Kansas City fell and dropped to 5-4 on the season – now two wins behind the Denver Broncos in the AFC West.
Buffalo’s defense also contained the Mahomes-Kelce partnership, cutting off the rhythm that usually drives Kansas City’s offense and without that link, the Chiefs’ passing attack lacked its usual threat.
KC’s playoff dominance over Buffalo remains intact, but its current form raises concerns so as the Chiefs move forward, the focus must be on rebuilding their timing and composure.
