Graham Craker—who the boys lovingly referred to as “Crackers”—was a protection officer for a young William and Harry. Referring to Craker in his 2023 memoir Spare, Harry wrote, “The driver had to keep pulling over so the bodyguard could get out and clear the flowers off the windscreen. The bodyguard was Graham. Willy and I liked him a lot. We always called him Crackers, as in Graham Crackers. We thought it was hysterical.”
Craker’s death was confirmed by his sons on social media, who described their father as “an incredible man” who “lived his life so selflessly,” per the BBC.

Craker was with William and Harry at the royal family’s late summer retreat, Balmoral, when Diana died on August 31, 1997. He later said in an interview he was in “disbelief” when he learned that she’d lost her life in a Paris car accident.

“You try and deal with it as best you can, but you do get quite emotional about it,” Craker said, per The Telegraph. “Perhaps the most emotional was seeing William the morning after. I saw William walking his dog outside, and I walked up to him and said, ‘I’m very, very sorry to hear your bad news.’ William, very sadly, said, ‘Thank you.’”

Of the mourning period, “Most of the time it was almost as if it was raining flowers,” he said in the 2017 documentary Diana: The Day We Said Goodbye. “It was very poignant knowing that each of those flowers represents the emotions of somebody in the crowd.”

Of her September 6 funeral and the procession from St. James’s Palace to Westminster Abbey, he said, “We tried using the windscreen wipers but the driver was finding it quite hard to see. I called the motorcycle escort in front and said we need to stop. I took the flowers off the bonnet and laid them beside the road.”
In an interview with The New York Post, Craker said, “I was standing at the rear of the hearse, and William looked up and acknowledged me. I looked towards him and nodded. William was comforted that I was with his mum on her final journey.”
Craker served with London’s Metropolitan police for 35 years, ultimately retiring in 2001. He was awarded with the Royal Victorian Order, an award given to those who have served the monarchy personally; he was also a guest at William’s April 29, 2011 wedding to Kate Middleton, nearly 14 years ago.

Craker’s cause of death has not yet been reported
